Whenever anyone gets a disease, condition, or nasty something, there’s a big question everyone wants to know. Is it contagious? That alone is going to determine whether you shake hands or exit the room. What about mange? If your pet has mange, will your other pets get it? Will the neighbor’s dog get it? Will he pass it on? Will you get it? Let’s get the facts.

Demodectic Mange? No Worries.
First off, we’ve got to figure out what kind of mange we’re talking about here. Demodectic mange is the kind of mange that puppies get. It usually runs its course, and then runs out, and won’t be seen again. This kind of mange is not contagious. It may be that the puppies got it from mommy, but no one else is going to get the mange. No worries. They can frolic and play, cuddle, and tumble, and you can rest assured. No one else is going to get it.

Other Types of Mange? Incredibly Contagious!
The other kind of mange—and unfortunately, this is the most common variety—is really, really contagious. This type of mange, also known as scabies, is one of the most contagious conditions that a pet could ever get. And if your pet gets it, it can easily be passed around. How easy is it for scabies to jump from Pet A to Pet B? Pretty easy indeed. These scabies mights can jump several yards, allowing scabies to be transmitted through the air. Another type of highly contagious mange is called cheyletiella mange. It is also known as walking dandruff, and it can also be transmitted through the air.

If your pet has mange, please be considerate and keep your pet away from other animals. If you know of another animal that has mange, keep your pet away.
