As awful as it sounds, some people suggest using lime sulfur to treat mange. You may have no idea what lime sulfur is, does, or smells like, and that’s pretty much okay. It stinks, it stains, and it’s not all that good for you. It is a great solution for keeping the fungi, bacteria, and insects off your orchards, but we aren’t big fans of using it to treat mange.

Once you read about how to do it, you’re going to have no problem avoiding lime sulfur as a mange treatment. First, you buy the solution. Then, you dilute it, usually 1 part lime sulfur to 16 parts water. Then, you apply the dip. This is the tough part. It is recommended that you wear protective gloves, protective clothes, protective cap, and even a protective mask. Then, you actually sponge it on your dog. Beware of using lime sulfur around the lawn or garden. Lime sulfur will kill grass and other foliage.
Some Serious Cons to Using Lime Sulfur to Treat Mange
- Lime sulfur is a powerful corrosive. Using lime sulfur to treat mange is like banging your head on a wall to get rid of the pain in your stomach. You’ve just replaced one pain with a worse one. Okay, maybe it’s not quite that bad, but it can be a very uncomfortable experience for your pet. Lime sulfur can cause burns, and severe skin irritation for you and your pet.
- Lime sulfur has only moderate success in treating mange. The whole point of treating mange with lime sulfur is to get rid of the mange, right? Unfortunately, lime sulfur doesn’t even do a good job of that.
- Lime sulfur stinks. It’s not high on our list, but it does register. If you enjoy the smell of rotten eggs, go right ahead.
- Lime sulfur damages things. Besides staining clothes and other materials, lime sulfur can kill your yard. It’s kind of like pouring Round-Up over everything. Not exactly a great way to win lawn and garden awards.
So, there you have it—the facts on lime sulfur. Quite obviously, we don’t recommend it. But then again.
