I can’t imagine getting chicken pox again. When I had it as a kid, I was like 8 years old. Now, nearing thirty, I would probably die if I got it again. Thankfully, I never will. But when you’re talking about mange, it’s not like chicken pox. A pet that gets mange once in his or her lifetime can very well get it again. Demodectic mange in puppies

You should be aware that there is one kind of mange that may occur repeatedly. In puppies, demodectic mange can occur repeatedly. The young dog’s immune system is not strong enough to fight the infection from the mange mites. Demodectic mange may recur numerous times in the first two years of the puppy’s life, and after that time, the mange should be clear.

Preventing the Return of Mange
If mange hits once, you should do what you can to minimize the chance of its coming back. Mange mites can survive apart from a host—be it man or animal—for up to three weeks. Your goal in fighting mange is to fight the mites, wherever they may be. Here’s how.

• Make sure that your pet is clean.
• Be religious about any mange treatment regiment prescribed by the vet.
• Wash every animal in the house, and have every one living in the house take a long, hot shower.
• Thoroughly vacuum all the floors, carpets, upholstery, and other surfaces are areas where the pet could have been. Carefully dispose of the vacuum bag.
• Use a professional steam-cleaning service or a steam vacuum to wash the carpets.
• Mop and wipe down all surfaces.
• Sanitize or dispense of any pet toys, leashes, or bedding.
• You may also wish to have the home’s HVAC system professionally cleaned.
