If mange strikes, you want to know about it. Thankfully, mange is one of those types of conditions where you’re going to see some definite changes in your pet. Here’s what to watch for–telltale signs that mange may be present.

Your Pet is Scratching

An occasional scratch is no problem, for cats or dogs. But when scratching becomes a constant activity, then you know something is up. Persistent scratching means that something is bothering your pet beyond the occasional flea or bug bite.

Your Pet Has Patches of Thinning Hair

If you see any patch of thin hair or scaly spots, you have a skin disorder on your hands, and it is most likely mange. Although mange can affect the entire body, it usually first targets the facial area, often around the ears. Look for thin-hair spots around the eyes, nose, and mouth as well. Some animals develop mange on the front of the legs early on.

Your Pet Has Red Spots and/or Damaged Skin

Mange first shows up in hair loss, but the real condition is in the skin. If you notice patches of red skin, dry skin, flaky skin, or otherwise ugly skin, it could be a sign of mange. If left alone, these skin infections will break open and develop papules and other wounds.

Obviously, any one of the symptoms above could be experienced by an animal, yet with no mange infection. However, if you do notice any of these conditions, it is a strong possibility that your pet has mange. Your first response should be to take the animal to a vet.
