Deep down, a lot of us are DIYers. We like to do things ourselves. Sometimes, this can be good, and sometimes…not so good. Mange is one of those conditions that has grown up with a lot of DIY solutions. Here’s an overview of some do it yourself mange treatments.

  • The Garlic Treatment. You thinking what I’m thinking? Yep. As if your pet didn’t have enough odor problems, you’re about to make it worse. Garlic is a natural antibacterial cleanser, so it can help to get rid of the mites, and the mange. Plus, it also cleanses the skin of parasites.
  • Wormwood pesticides. Wormwood, also known as artemisia and absinthium is a powerfully-smelling substance that is very effective at getting rid of little pests. It has moderate success in cleansing animals of mange. Create a concentrated wormwood tea from wormwood leaves and dilute in a gallon of water. Then, sponge the solution onto your pet.
  • Lemongrass tea. Lemongrass is as edible as they come, and you may have even tasted it, especially in Asian dishes. Lemongrass tea, which you can make yourself with lemongrass, may help to get rid of mange.
  • Benadryl lotion. Benadryl, a common household medication, has often been used to treat mange. It has varying success, most of the varying being on the side of unsuccessful. What Benadryl does do is provide relief from the itching. The Benadryl treatment may be combined with other forms of treatment.

A word of caution is in order. Although the DIY way may be appealing and seem cost-effective, take heed. Not all mange treatments are out to scam you. In fact, the cost of a single successful mange treatment is a whole lot less than a series of failed DIY experiments. Plus, they are more likely to work. Mange is notoriously tough to treat if you do it without the good stuff, and unfortunately, benadryl, lemon grass, wormwood, and garlic isn’t exactly the good stuff.
